Anterior quadrangular lobule (HlV) of cerebellum

Anterior quadrangular lobule refers to a region of the anterior lobe of the cerebellum, located between the anterior medullary velum and the primary fissure. It is involved in the coordination of voluntary motor activity, especially of the limbs and trunk.

Function:

The anterior quadrangular lobule is part of the anterior lobe of the cerebellum, which plays a critical role in:

  • Coordination of voluntary movements, particularly of the limbs (especially the upper limbs)

  • Posture and balance, through integration of proprioceptive input from the spinal cord

  • Motor learning and timing of movement

  • Refinement of motor commands initiated by the cerebral cortex

MRI Appearance:

Normal:

  • Appears as part of the anterior lobe of the cerebellum

  • Has similar signal intensity to other cerebellar cortex regions:

    • T1-weighted MRI: intermediate to low signal

    • T2-weighted MRI: relatively high signal (due to gray matter)

    • FLAIR: usually no signal unless pathology is present

CT Appearance:

Normal:

  • Poor resolution of cerebellar cortex on CT

  • Appears isodense or slightly hypodense to surrounding brain tissue
