Corona of glans penis

The corona of the glans penis is the prominent rounded projecting margin that separates the glans penis from the shaft of the penis. It forms a distinct anatomical landmark and overhangs the neck of the penis (sulcus coronarius). The corona contains abundant sensory nerve endings and vascular structures, making it one of the most sensitive erogenous zones in the male body.

It has important clinical and surgical significance, particularly in circumcision, balanitis, and evaluation of penile lesions.

Synonyms

  • Coronary ridge of glans

  • Penile corona

  • Corona glandis

Location and Structure

  • Location: Distal penis, at the junction between the glans penis and the penile shaft

  • Structure: Raised, rounded border encircling the base of the glans penis

  • Inferior relation: Overhangs the sulcus coronarius, a groove separating the corona from the penile shaft

Relations

  • Anteriorly: Glans penis dome

  • Posteriorly: Penile shaft, continuous with the neck of the penis

  • Laterally: Continuous circular ridge around the glans

  • Inferiorly: Sulcus coronarius leading into the prepuce in uncircumcised males

Function

  • Provides sensory stimulation due to dense innervation (branches of the dorsal nerve of the penis, pudendal nerve)

  • Contributes to sexual arousal and reflexes

  • Acts as an anatomical boundary between shaft and glans

  • Protects the sulcus region, especially in uncircumcised males where foreskin attaches

Clinical Significance

  • Balanitis and balanoposthitis: Inflammation often involves the corona

  • Penile carcinoma: Frequently originates at the corona or sulcus due to chronic irritation

  • Sexual health: Corona is a key erogenous zone

  • Circumcision: Prepuce is attached at the corona, making it surgically relevant

  • Radiology/urology: Site for localization of penile lesions, tumors, or trauma

MRI Appearance

T1-weighted images:

  • Corona appears as intermediate signal intensity structure, distinguishable from surrounding bright fat and low-signal skin

  • Vascular channels may be slightly hyperintense

T2-weighted images:

  • Corona demonstrates intermediate to mildly hyperintense signal relative to shaft tissues

  • Vascular spaces may appear hyperintense

STIR (Short Tau Inversion Recovery):

  • Corona shows intermediate to mildly hyperintense signal

  • Inflammation, edema, or tumor involvement appear bright
