Frontal horn of lateral ventricle

The frontal horn of the lateral ventricle is the anterior (front) extension of the lateral ventricle located within the frontal lobe of the brain. It forms part of the ventricular system, which contains cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The frontal horn lies anterior to the interventricular foramen (of Monro) and is bounded medially by the septum pellucidum, laterally by the head of the caudate nucleus, and superiorly by the corpus callosum. Its shape and size can be influenced by age, developmental factors, or pathological processes such as hydrocephalus, atrophy, or masses.

MRI Appearance of Frontal Horn of Lateral Ventricle

  • T2-Weighted Imaging

    • The frontal horn appears as a well-defined, CSF-filled cavity.

    • CSF within the frontal horn is hyperintense (bright) on T2.

    • Surrounding brain parenchyma shows intermediate to hypointense signal compared to CSF.

    • Margins are smooth and sharply demarcated from adjacent brain structures.

  • T1-Weighted Imaging

    • The frontal horn is hypointense (dark) relative to brain tissue due to the CSF signal.

    • Clearly outlines the boundaries of the ventricle in relation to the caudate nucleus and corpus callosum.

    • Pathologies (e.g., blood, tumor) can alter normal signal characteristics.

  • FLAIR Imaging

    • CSF within the frontal horn is suppressed (dark) on FLAIR sequences.

    • Provides high contrast for detecting periventricular lesions, such as demyelination or edema, as these appear hyperintense (bright) against the dark CSF.

    • Useful for identifying subtle abnormalities adjacent to the ventricular walls.

CT Appearance of Frontal Horn of Lateral Ventricle

  • Appears as a well-demarcated, CSF-density (hypodense) space within the frontal lobe.
