Innominate line (skull)

The innominate line is a radiographic line seen on frontal skull and orbital views, representing the dense cortical outline of the greater wing of the sphenoid forming the superolateral wall of the orbit; it appears as a smooth curved bony margin within the lateral orbit, and its thinning, distortion or absence (the “bare orbit” or “empty orbit” sign) is classically associated with sphenoid wing dysplasia, particularly in neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1).
