Jugular foramen pars vascularis

The pars vascularis of the jugular foramen is the lateral compartment of the jugular foramen, located at the skull base. It primarily transmits the internal jugular vein, along with meningeal branches and other small vascular structures. Knowledge of its anatomy, function, and imaging appearance is critical for radiologists, neurosurgeons, and ENT specialists for evaluation of vascular lesions, tumors, or surgical planning.

Function

  • Transmits the internal jugular vein, allowing venous drainage from the brain

  • Accommodates meningeal arteries and smaller vascular structures

  • Supports vascular integrity at the skull base

  • Provides passage for cranial nerves IX, X, XI in close proximity (though primarily in pars nervosa)

MRI Appearance
T1-weighted images:

  • The venous structures within the pars vascularis appear intermediate to low signal

  • Surrounding bone is hypointense

  • Flow voids of high-velocity blood may appear as signal loss

T2-weighted images:

  • Venous structures show  intermediate to low signal, with surrounding bone remaining hypointense

  • Highlights vascular anomalies or thrombosis

MR Venography / STIR:

  • MR venography enhances visualization of the jugular bulb and vein

  • STIR is generally used to suppress surrounding fat and highlight vascular or inflammatory changes

CT Appearance

  • The bony jugular foramen is clearly visualized on axial and coronal CT

  • Pars vascularis appears as the lateral compartment of the foramen

  • Useful to detect bony erosions, fractures, or lesions compressing vascular structures

  • Contrast-enhanced CT can delineate the internal jugular vein and venous anomalies
