Medial occipital artery

The medial occipital artery is a cortical branch of the posterior cerebral artery (PCA) that primarily supplies the medial aspect of the occipital lobe, especially the primary visual cortex (V1) and adjacent visual association areas.

MRI Appearance

T1-weighted images:

  • The artery itself is not directly visualized, appearing as a small tubular low-signal structure in the sulcal spaces

  • Surrounding brain parenchyma is isointense; high-resolution sequences may detect larger branches

T2-weighted images:

  • Vessels are hypointense relative to CSF, often seen as flow voids along the medial occipital cortex

  • Larger branches supplying the calcarine sulcus can sometimes be traced in high-resolution T2 imaging
